Etihad Water and Electricity plays key role in $2.6bn Oman CCGT projects

UAE utility Etihad Water and Electricity has announced that it is part of two consortiums - Misfah and Duqm - that have been awarded the contracts to develop gas-fired power plants in Oman with a total 2.6GW capacity.

The 1,700MW Misfah project is being led by Nebras Power, a global power development and investment company based in Qatar, with consortium partners Oman's Bahwan Infrastructure Services and Ewec, while the Duqm project is led by Korea Western Power (Kowepo) with consortium partners Nebras Power, Bahwan Infrastructure Services as well as Ewec. It will have a planned capacity of around 877MW.

According to Etihad Water and Electricity, both these plants, which will boast combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology, are being set up at a total investment of RO1 billion ($2.6 billion).

The agreements were signed by Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement with the Nebras Power-led consortium and Kowepo-led consortium.

Speaking on the occasion, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Etihad Water and Electricity Chairman said: "This partnership reflects the UAE’s commitment to advancing mutually beneficial and sustainable energy cooperation across the region. By working with trusted partners in Oman, we are supporting the development of highly efficient, flexible generation capacity that strengthens energy security and reliability, while remaining aligned with the long-term transition to lower-emissions energy systems."

"We value the strong bilateral ties between our two countries and lookforward to continued collaboration that delivers tangible outcomes for sustainable growth," he stated.

Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, said the Misfah and Duqm projects represent an important step in strengthening the national energy system and reflect Oman’s commitment to achieving the objectives of OmanVision 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050, through the deployment of high-efficiency technologies capable of operating with fuel blends containing up to 30% hydrogen.

Once operational, the projects are expected to support the stability of Oman’s national electricity grid and meet rising power demand linked to industrial and economic expansion.

Oman is pursuing new power generation capacity as part of its Vision 2040 strategy and its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
