1 KILLED IN ABU DHABI, MULTIPLE ATTACKS ON GULF STATES BY IRAN

At least one person has been killed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in multiple missile launches by Iran that targeted US bases across the Gulf region.

Missiles hit a US bases in Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, reports said. Several missiles launched from Iran were intercepted, according to the WAM news agency.

The attacks follow this morning's strikes on Iran by US and Israel.

Multiple explosions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have also been reported. This is in addition to an earlier attack on Abu Dhabi. AFP news agency reported explosions in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh as well.

The UAE said “this attack is a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and international law”. It added “it reserves its full right to respond to this escalation”.

According to Iran's Fars news agency, Iran has targeted: Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar; Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait; Al-Dhafra Air Base in the UAE; and The fifth US base in Bahrain.

Many Gulf countries have closed their airspace and regional airlines have suspended operations. 

Qatar Airways flights to, and from, Doha have been temporarily suspended due to the closure of Qatari airspace. The safety of our passengers and employees is always our highest priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused., said the airline. 

Turkish Airlines has cancelled flights to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Oman, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Jordan.

UAE MINISTRY STATEMENT

The UAE Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced that the UAE air defence systems dealt with the missiles with high efficiency and successfully intercepted a number of missiles. Authorities in the UAE also handled the fall of some missile debris in a residential area which resulted in some material damage.

The fallen debris also resulted in one civilian death of an Asian nationality. The authorities confirmed that the security situation in the UAE remains stable and that all concerned entities are monitoring developments around the clock.

The Ministry strongly condemned the attack, affirming the UAE’s categorical rejection of any targeting of civilian objects, facilities and national institutions. It stressed that such acts constitute a dangerous escalation and a cowardly act that threatens the safety of civilians and undermines stability.

The Ministry further stated that the targeting represents a blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law, affirming that the UAE reserves its full right to respond to this escalation and to take all necessary measures to protect its territory, citizens and residents, and to safeguard its sovereignty, security and stability.

The Ministry affirmed its full readiness and preparedness to deal with any threats, stressing that all necessary measures are being taken to firmly confront any attempts to undermine the country’s security and stability. It added that the safety of citizens, residents and visitors remains a top priority that cannot be compromised.

BAHRAIN STATEMENT

The National Communication Centre (NCC) confirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain had been subjected to external attacks targeting sites and installations within its borders.  These actions constituted a flagrant violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and security, it said.

The security and military authorities had immediately activated established emergency protocols and were taking all necessary operational measures on the ground.

The NCC conveyed the Government of Bahrain’s strongest condemnation of these treacherous attacks, which posed a direct threat to the Kingdom’s security and the safety of its citizens and residents. The Government affirmed its full right to respond and to take all necessary measures to defend its national security and safeguard its sovereignty, in coordination with its allies and partners, it said.

Further details regarding military developments would be released by the authorities in due course, consistent with the requirements of national interest and security, it added.
